Job DetailsResponsibilities:Edits or rewrites manuscripts and other special-project-generated materials for a peer-reviewed medical journal. Job includes ensuring accuracy of references, verifying data, generating galley proofs, author correspondence, coordinating author revisions and approvals, final proofing, and reviewing material for compliance with copyright regulations, including securing needed permissions.Selects, creates, or coordinates the development of accompanying graphic elements such as illustrations, tables, charts, and videos with authors, medical illustrators, and web designers. Coordinates, maintains, and monitors editorial schedules and deadlines. Develops and maintains relationship with freelance editors as needed. Supports activities involved in the acquisition of physician-authored journal articles to ensure an adequate pipeline of high-quality publishable material. May assist authors in the use of the web-based manuscript tracking system.Supports proper vetting and high-quality peer-review of submitted medical/scientific materials prior to publication. Communicates the results of peer review with authors and resolves any conflicts. Obtains financial disclosure information from authors in compliance with department requirements. Provides overall project management and editorial support for department projects as needed. In all editorial assignments, maintains departmental editorial style guidelines, ensuring that materials are high-quality, accurate, and consistent in style.Coordinates with CME department to maintain a calendar of courses and other educational activities. In collaboration with department leadership, may develop budgets and project proposals. Other duties as assigned. EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or other relevant field. Demonstrated medical writing and editing ability. Ability to understand and distill medical research; proficiency in online medical resource use; knowledge of the publishing process from conceptualization to printing.LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: NoneCOMPLEXITY OF WORK: Strong interpersonal skills in communicating with others, in particular health care professionals, via telephone, e-mail, and in person. Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Excellent time management and organizational skills. WORK EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 5 years of applicable experience in medical publishing. Experience in the development of medical, scientific, and educational materials.Experience in medical journal publishing a plus. Strong editing and writing skills are a must. An additional 5 years of related experience may offset the degree requirement. Ability to manage freelancers (editors and writers), designers, and production people. Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, in particular Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires extensive standing and walking to various locations on campus.
