About the role Layer2 is hiring a Senior Cloud Network Engineer – Google Cloud to join a remote engagement supporting a U.S.-based customer. This role is fully remote, but open only to candidates based in one of the following locations: the Chicago Metropolitan Area, California, or New York. You must be authorized to work in the United States. In this role, you will help design, improve, and support cloud and hybrid networking environments, with a strong focus on Google Cloud, infrastructure automation, and network reliability. We are looking for an experienced engineer who understands both cloud networking and traditional on-premises infrastructure, and who can work closely with cloud platform teams and customer stakeholders to deliver secure, reliable, and scalable network solutions connecting enterprise environments to Google Cloud. What you’ll do • Design and operate hybrid networking architectures connecting on-premises environments with Google Cloud. • Support Google Cloud networking across VPC, VPN, Interconnect, load balancing, and firewall policies. • Troubleshoot complex routing, DNS, load balancing, connectivity, and infrastructure issues. • Build, manage, and refactor infrastructure using Terraform. • Design and maintain Terraform modules to support scalable and repeatable infrastructure delivery. • Design secure network architectures, including segmentation and firewall policies. • Automate repetitive tasks to improve reliability and reduce operational overhead. • Support performance monitoring, issue identification, and root cause analysis. • Work with cloud platform engineering teams and customer stakeholders to deliver reliable infrastructure solutions. What we’re looking for: Required qualifications • Extensive hands-on experience with Google Cloud networking, especially VPC, VPN, Interconnect, load balancing, and firewall policies. • Experience designing or operating hybrid cloud network architectures connecting on-premises environments to Google Cloud. • Advanced Terraform expertise, including module design, refactoring, automation, and infrastructure-as-code best practices. • Experience building or maintaining reusable Terraform modules for complex infrastructure environments. • Solid understanding of Azure networking, especially VNet management. • Proven experience designing, implementing, installing, maintaining, and administering infrastructure systems across hardware, software, and configuration layers. • Strong troubleshooting experience across routing, DNS, load balancing, connectivity, firewall policies, and hybrid network environments. • Proactive approach to performance monitoring, issue identification, and root cause analysis. • Active Google Cloud certification(s), with certification names and dates clearly available. • Active networking certification(s), with certification names and dates clearly available. Strong plus • Experience with JSON-driven Terraform hydration modules. • Experience integrating Terraform with BlueCat for automated CIDR range provisioning. • Hands-on experience with Spacelift for infrastructure delivery and workflow automation. • Familiarity with Google Cloud Network Connectivity Center. • Experience automating infrastructure workflows in complex cloud or hybrid environments. • Experience supporting infrastructure reliability, observability, and operational improvement initiatives.
