Role DescriptionWe are seeking a Director of Engineering for Search & Discovery to lead one of our most critical domains. Search & Discovery is the “front door" of our marketplace. It is where our customers’ intent meets our supply. Your mission is to rebuild the site search and discovery engine from the ground up. • Lead the Transformation: Own the technical strategy and execution for migrating our Search and Catalog domains from a legacy monolith to a modern, event-driven, service-oriented architecture.• Build the "Perfect Match" Engine: Architect systems that solve the complex B2B discovery problem: matching high-value, high-stakes orders with reliable suppliers across variable geographies. • Drive "Brilliant at the Basics": Partner with Product to relentlessly optimize our core user journey, eliminate friction, improve latency, and deliver relevant results instantly, impacting our Conversion Rate (CVR). • Modernize the Core Data: Oversee the menu data modernization initiative, building the ingestion pipelines and tools to handle complex menus at scale.• Implement AI-Native Discovery: Move beyond keyword search by integrating search, semantic understanding, and LLM-driven recommendations for a conversational, intuitive discovery experience. • Build a High-Performance Team: Manage and mentor a team of Engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, ownership, and obsessive customer focus. Qualifications• 7+ years of engineering leadership experience, with a specific track record in Search, Discovery, or Catalog systems at scale (eCommerce or Marketplace experience is highly preferred).• Experience leading migrations from monoliths to microservices/SOA, with an understanding of the trade-offs of modern search technologies and data architectures. • Ability to build products, understanding how latency, relevance, and UI performance directly impact business metrics like GMV and CVR. • Comfortable using data to make decisions, with an understanding of how to measure search quality and run rigorous A/B tests to validate improvements. • Transformational leadership skills, able to rally a team through complex re-platforming while delivering incremental value and maintaining high code quality and operational maturity.Requirements• Deep domain expertise in engineering leadership. • Architectural vision for modern search technologies. • Product mindset focused on user experience and business impact. • Data-driven decision-making skills. • Transformational leadership capabilities.
