Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Day One Partners is a search firm that collaborates with venture capital firms to build high-growth technology companies. They are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design and scale backend systems for a fintech company focused on real-time transaction processing and data infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Design and build high-performance backend services optimized for low latency and high throughput
- Develop and scale event-driven microservices that process real-time data and transactions
- Architect distributed systems with a focus on reliability, fault tolerance, and scalability
- Implement and optimize database strategies (e.g., partitioning, sharding, indexing) to support large-scale workloads
- Build and maintain asynchronous messaging systems (e.g., Kafka) for service-to-service communication
- Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and improve development workflows for efficient, reliable deployments
- Write and maintain automated tests to ensure system performance and reliability
- Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and proactively address bottlenecks
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, infrastructure, and engineering teams
- Participate in code reviews and mentor engineers to help elevate overall engineering quality
Skills
- 4–8+ years of experience building and operating backend systems in production environments
- Strong experience designing and scaling distributed systems with high throughput and low latency requirements
- Deep understanding of concurrency, multi-threading, and performance optimization
- Experience building event-driven systems using messaging technologies such as Kafka, Pulsar, or similar
- Hands-on experience designing and optimizing data storage systems, including partitioning, sharding, and indexing
- Experience working with relational and/or NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, Cassandra) at scale
- Experience deploying and operating systems in cloud environments (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure)
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and modern DevOps practices
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills in complex, distributed environments
- Ability to collaborate effectively across teams and communicate technical concepts clearly
- Proficiency in Java or a comparable backend programming language
- Strong experience with multi-threading and designing high-throughput systems
- Hands-on experience with messaging systems such as Kafka or similar technologies
- Experience with database technologies such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or comparable systems
- Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and modern development practices
- Strong communication and collaboration skills in team-based environments
- Experience with containerization and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
- Familiarity with observability tools, including monitoring and distributed tracing platforms
- Experience working on high-scale transactional or financial systems
- Exposure to performance tuning in real-time, high-availability environments
