They are seeking a Senior CPE/Device Provisioning Network Engineer to provide expert consulting and technical guidance for the assessment, design, and improvement of platforms and protocols used to provision and manage customer-premises equipment.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert consulting and technical guidance for CPE provisioning, device management, and reliability platforms across broadband, voice, video, Wi-Fi, and business services
- Engineer, support, optimize, and maintain provisioning platforms, device management systems, firmware management processes, and activation flows for CPE and access devices
- Contribute to troubleshooting of complex provisioning flows involving DHCP, TFTP, DNS, NTP/ToD, TR-069, TR-181, USP/TR-369, SNMP, RADIAAA, HTTP/HTTPS, APIs, and related protocols
- Support provisioning and lifecycle management for devices such as DOCSIS cable modems, fiber ONTs, residential gateways, Wi-Fi routers, voice eMTAs/ATAs, set-top boxes, and managed business CPE
- Partner with OSS/BSS, inventory, order management, billing, service activation, and workflow automation teams to ensure accurate and reliable service provisioning
- Support development and recommend improvements for engineering standards for device configuration templates, service profiles, firmware rules, boot files, DHCP scopes/options, device management policies, and provisioning logic
- Support root-cause analysis for failed activations, incorrect service profiles, firmware issues, device registration problems, communication failures, DHCP/TFTP/configuration errors, and configuration drift
- Support integration between provisioning platforms and network elements such as CMTS/CCAP, OLTs, device platforms, DHCP servers, TFTP/HTTP servers, DNS, AAA, monitoring systems, and OSS platforms
- Develop and improve automation, scripts, dashboards, APIs, alarms, and operational tools to increase provisioning accuracy, reduce manual intervention, and accelerate issue resolution
- Apply Site Reliability Engineering practices to improve the availability, resiliency, scalability, and operational maturity of provisioning and device management platforms
- Define and monitor service-level indicators and reliability targets for critical provisioning flows, device activation, firmware compliance, device registration, platform availability, API performance, and service restoration
- Improve observability through dashboards, logs, metrics, traces, synthetic checks, alarms, and event correlation across provisioning, DHCP, TFTP, DNS, AAA, OSS/BSS, and network systems
- Develop automation to reduce operational toil, prevent repeat incidents, improve self-service capabilities, and accelerate detection, diagnosis, and remediation
- Provide post-incident analysis and recommendations for provisioning and device management platform issues
- Support capacity planning, performance tuning, redundancy validation, disaster recovery readiness, and change-risk reduction for production platforms
- Collaborate as needed to gather requirements for deliverables
- Drive continuous improvement of deployment, rollback, validation, monitoring, and operational readiness processes for platform changes, firmware rollouts, and new service launches
- Develop dashboards or tools to enable KPI tracking related to device activation, provisioning success rate, firmware compliance, device reachability, device registration, configuration drift, failed activations, and platform health
- Advise on firmware lifecycle management, including certification support, staged rollouts, rollback planning, compliance tracking, device compatibility testing, and production risk mitigation
- Advise on incident patterns and mitigation strategies during platform migrations, new device launches, new service introductions, and vendor escalations
- Review technical designs, implementation plans, change requests, test plans, and operational readiness documentation
- Create and maintain engineering documentation, operational runbooks, troubleshooting guides, provisioning standards, diagrams, and knowledge base materials
- Identify opportunities to improve platform resiliency, observability, scalability, security, automation, and operational efficiency
Skills
- Strong understanding of broadband and CPE provisioning architectures at scale
- Hands-on experience engineering and supporting provisioning and device management platforms in a production service provider environment
- Deep working knowledge of protocols such as: DHCP, TFTP, DNS, NTP / ToD, TR-069 / CWMP, TR-181 data model, USP / TR-369, SNMP, RADIUS / AAA, HTTP / HTTPS provisioning, REST APIs and platform integrations
- Experience with one or more access technologies: DOCSIS / HFC, GPON / XGS-PON, FTTH, Ethernet broadband, Managed Wi-Fi, VoIP CPE / eMTA / ATA
- Experience with device management, firmware management, or provisioning platforms
- Strong understanding of CPE firmware management, device configuration templates, service profiles, boot files, and provisioning workflows
- Ability to troubleshoot packet-level provisioning flows using tools such as Wireshark, tcpdump, logs, syslog, device traces, DHCP/TFTP logs, and platform telemetry
- Experience with Linux systems, scripting, APIs, SQL, and automation tools
- Understanding of OSS/BSS integration, service activation workflows, inventory systems, and order-driven provisioning
- Understanding of Site Reliability Engineering principles, including observability, reliability targets, incident management, toil reduction, automation, capacity planning, and operational readiness
- Experience creating or maintaining dashboards, alerts, KPIs, and health checks for production platforms
- Ability to use logs, metrics, packet captures, platform telemetry, monitoring systems, and operational data to troubleshoot complex production issues
- Experience improving reliability and reducing operational risk in high-availability production environments
- Ability to contribute to complex technical investigations across multiple platforms, teams, vendors, and network domains
- Strong documentation, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Experience with platforms such as Nokia Motive/IMPACT, Incognito, Axiros, Friendly Device, Calix, Adtran, Cisco, Casa, Harmonic, CommScope, or similar
- Knowledge of DOCSIS provisioning flows including DHCP, TFTP, ToD, config files, CMTS registration, service flows, and modem lifecycle states
- Knowledge of fiber ONT provisioning using OMCI, OLT service profiles, line profiles, service profiles, and activation workflows
- Experience with Wi-Fi gateway management, mesh platforms, remote diagnostics, device telemetry, and customer-care tools
- Experience creating dashboards, alarms, KPIs, and operational reporting for provisioning and device management platforms
- Scripting and automation experience with Python, Bash, SQL, REST APIs, Ansible, Git, CI/CD, or workflow automation platforms
- Experience with observability and monitoring platforms such as Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, Elastic, Datadog, Dynatrace, AppDynamics, OpenTelemetry, or similar
- Experience with SRE practices such as SLIs/SLOs, error budgets, synthetic monitoring, post-incident reviews, toil reduction, and automated remediation
- Experience with high-availability design, disaster recovery testing, capacity modeling, performance tuning, and production readiness reviews
- Experience building automation for incident response, health validation, service restoration, configuration audits, or compliance reporting
- Experience supporting large-scale firmware deployments, staged rollouts, rollback plans, and production change management
- Experience working with NOC, field operations, customer care, vendors, architecture, security, product, and OSS/BSS teams
