Position OverviewMEJC seeks a project coordinator to oversee the MiBlackStudent Project (MiBSP). This position is funded through 09/30/2027 with an opportunity to extend, dependent on fundraising. This position will support efforts to coordinate and administer the MiBlackStudent Project community research program related to culturally relevant curriculum equity projects, Black educator retention and eliminating the school to prison pipeline.ResponsibilitiesThe following responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed. • Participate in MEJC coalition check-ins, training and assigned activities Review field studies and other research and assessment projects related to culturally responsive curriculum, teacher retention, and investigating the school to prison pipeline within Michigan
• Coordinate with Gogebic Ontonagon ISD & BOOM on project finances and progress.
• Monitor project timelines, ensuring project progress
• Assist the MiBSP taskforce, grantees, and MEJC to implement changes and updates as needed
• Design, implement, and track project work-flow processes and project infrastructure
• May supervise other employees, as needed
• Ad hoc Fundraising for MiBSP

Taskforce Coordination

• Facilitate the work of the project’s task force, providing task force members with resources and support to fulfill their responsibilities effectively. This includes scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, and ensuring timely delivery of RFPs, evaluations, and recommendations
• Serve as the primary liaison between the task force, MEJC African American Committee, Michigan Department of Education, Fiscal Sponsor, and sub grantees
• Present projects submitted by local school districts, universities, or other program-grant applicants to the MiBSP taskforce for approval. Modify the project designs with the direction and input of the MiBSP taskforce

Stakeholder Engagement

• Collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including educators, community leaders, families, youth, researchers, and policymakers, to ensure alignment with project goals
• Establish and nurture relationships with participating school districts, universities, and social action organizations
• Represent the initiative at public meetings, conferences, and other events to build awareness and support

Evaluation and Reporting

• Oversee data collection and analysis to track project outcomes and effectiveness.
• Maintain records and prepare reports and correspondence related to the work.
• Oversee placement of and coordinate with project evaluation contractors in 2027 to ensure timely report submission in September 2027.
• Ensure compliance with grant requirements and reporting deadlines
• Ensure pilot projects and investigative studies approved for research opportunities within the MiBSP align with MEJC values
• Support additional organizations that work on data collection, reporting, and analysis systems for the evaluation and assessment of the Michigan Black Student Project

Qualifications

• Experience:

• Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Education, Public Administration, Social Work, or a related field and /or equivalent experience
• Minimum 6 years of program or project coordination experience (education, social justice, or community development preferred)
• Demonstrated experience working on equity-focused initiatives or with marginalized communities
• Demonstrated history of managing community research projects
• Skills & Attributes:

• Strong project management skills, including planning, organizing, and problem-solving
• Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage and work collaboratively to build consensus with diverse audiences
• Proven ability to manage budgets and oversee grant-funded projects
• Knowledge of educational equity issues, particularly those impacting Black students
• Knowledge of state and federal education laws
• Proficiency in educational research analysis
• Excellent ability to review research and assessment projects in the field of education.
• Ability to maintain records, and prepare reports and correspondence related to the work.
• Ability to maintain favorable public relations.
• Technical and software proficiency, including Google Suite (Calendar, Drive applications, Gmail, etc.)

• Preferred Additional Skills and Attributes

• Familiarity with Michigan’s education system and policies.
• Experience with participatory action research or community-based projects.
• Background in racial justice, advocacy, or related fields.
• Knowledge of modern developments, trends, and theories in education and education research, evaluation, and assessment.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of research, evaluation, and assessment.
• Knowledge of the history of human studies in America and its impact on marginalized communities and the importance of compliance and centering justice and equity in human studies
• Languages & Proficiency: Strong Proficiency in English
• Physical Demands: Extended hours working in front of a digital screen and attending in-person meetings. Ability to communicate proficiently via phone, virtual meetings, written, & in-person. Ability to operate tech equipment. Ability to comprehend information presented on a computer screen and in printed materials. Ability to understand & follow both oral and written instructions. Additional Job Specifications

• Supervisor: Director of MEJC
• Job Classification: full-time (FLSA-exempt)
• Job Length: At will employment; This role is currently grant funded through 09/30/2027, with an opportunity to extend, dependent on fundraising
• Compensation: $65,000-80,000 annually
• Typical Schedule: 40 hours per week, primarily weekdays with some evenings and weekends. Flexible work schedule, in coordination with manager
• Location: Hybrid: On-site & Virtual

• MEJC’s physical office (ADA accessible) is in midtown Detroit, and available for staff who prefer to work in onsite
• Travel expectations are minimal, but include site visits to school districts across the state
