Illustrator Wanted for Simple, Heartfelt Children’s Book on Grief
About the ProjectI am the founder ofThe Little Wind Phone Project ( a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to creating peaceful, healing spaces for grief support. We are developing a children’s book about grief—a gentle, honest, and comforting story that helps kids understand and process loss in a healthy way. The book features a recurring character (a capybara!) and a simple, warm visual style. The tone is tender, slightly quirky, and accessible for children ages 5–10. What We’re Looking ForI’m seeking an illustrator who can bring emotional depth to simple drawings.The aesthetic should be minimalist, with a strong use of white space, intentional visual quietness, and illustrations that support (rather than overpower) the text. This will not be a fully illustrated, full-bleed picture book. Most pages will include:- A small vignette or spot illustration- A single character or simple scene- Clean lines, limited color palette- Space for the words to breatheThink: gentle, expressive, understated — not busy or heavily detailed. Responsibilities- Create character concepts (especially the capybara protagonist)- Produce approximately 15-20 spot illustrations- Provide simple background elements as needed- Format illustrations for a standard 32–40 page children’s book layout- Deliver final artwork in high-resolution print-ready files- Collaborate on mood, tone, and visual storytelling- Incorporate feedback from grief professionals and educatorsIdeal Skills & Style- Experience illustrating for children ages 5–10- Ability to convey emotion with simplicity- Gentle, warm, expressive linework- Minimalist or modern picture-book style- Comfortable illustrating themes of grief with sensitivity- Open to collaboration and feedback- Familiarity with designing for print and bleed/safe areasBudget- Open to proposals.Please include your rate for the entire project with full commercial rights for nonprofit use.
