Job Summary/General Purpose of Job• The ABA Journal, the nation's premiere legal affairs magazine, is seeking an experienced journalist for its print and online publications. We're looking for someone with substantial experience covering the law and legal issues who can write engaging, compelling long form magazine stories as well as shorter news and feature stories.Flexible work arrangements available. • The job works with limited supervision in the development of story ideas and writes compelling legal affairs articles, features, and specialty pieces for the ABA Journal in both print and electronic formats. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities (listed in order of importance and/or time spent)• Authors legal affairs articles, features, and specialty pieces for publication in the ABA Journal. • Conceives compelling and informational story ideas for the target audience of the ABA Journal• Conducts research, vets and interviews sources, conducts fact-checking to ensure accuracy of reporting and mitigation of risk.• Conducts legal research for background and/or matters of current interest that affect the practice of law. • Uses all appropriate editing skills and writing techniques to optimize near first-time, print ready materials. • Conducts special projects on behalf of the ABA Journal. • Performs other related duties as required. Required Education, Qualifications, Experience• A bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Business Administration, or pre-law from an accredited college or university. • At least five years' experience in reporting/writing published materials focused on legal affairs.• Previous experience interviewing and vetting sources and ensuring the quality and correctness of articles in an appropriate journalistic format. • Previous experience authoring legal writings for the consumption of the legal professional that provide compelling reasons to read the materials and provide sufficiency of information to be meaningful and actionable. Preferred Education, Qualifications, Experience• Possession of a Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school. Physical Requirements• Typical office work environment.Extent of Travel Required in the Job• As a normal course of business, this job will typically require travel of less than 15% of the time.
